Job Description

The Assistant Teacher is responsible for children in a child care program in a manner that contributes to their growth and development and is consistent with the goals and philosophy of Lehigh Valley Children’s Centers, following program policies in accordance with Pennsylvania Department of Human Services Child Care Regulations, and where applicable Keystone STARS regulations.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participates in creating an atmosphere where the children develop confidence, independence and responsibility.
  • Provides discipline which is positive, consistent, and based upon expectations which are clearly defined and geared to appropriate developmental levels and individual needs.
  • Actively participates in daily classroom maintenance.
  • Works in conjunction with other staff in preparation of materials for daily activities
  • Maintains high standards of professional ethics and confidentiality in regard to children, staff and parents.
  • Supervises, directs, and is involved with small and large groups of children in both planned and spontaneous activities.
  • Works with any child needing special attention in conjunction with other staff and consultants as needed.
  • Supports person, (staff, volunteer, etc.) who is leading group activities by attending to needs of non-participants.
  • Cooperates and is flexible to ensure that center coverage is adequate and reflects changing needs of families served.
  • Encourages language development by helping to create an atmosphere in which the child is listened to as well as talked with.
  • Stimulates intellectual development by encouraging opportunities for language experiences, creative expression, stimulation of curiosity, problem solving, development of concepts, and other appropriate activities.
  • Encourages physical development by offering opportunities for development of gross and fine motor skills at the appropriate developmental level.
  • Encourages emotional development by offering opportunities for children to build a positive self concept in a secure, comfortable atmosphere in which there are appropriate success experiences.
  • Encourages social development by offering positive guidance in an atmosphere in which the child can grow as an individual.
  • Attends to physical and hygienic needs of the child including providing a pleasant daily rest time.
  • Responsible for carrying out Lehigh Valley Children’s Centers health and safety policies and procedures including monitoring children, activities, equipment, and environment for safety.
  • Models good health habits; complies with Lehigh Valley Children’s Centers dress code.
  • Promotes good eating habits by conversing with the children while sitting at the children's table during snack and meal times, eating with the children whenever possible following agency meal guidelines.
  • Attends workshops and conferences for professional development; completes a CPR course as well as the Management of Minor Illnesses and Emergencies course within the first year of employment.
  • Encourages and facilitates communication and cooperation between family and center.
  • Attends parent meetings and supports extra curricular activities of the center or agency upon request.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A CDA OR
  • A minimum of 9 credit hours from an accredited college or university in education or related field OR
  • A specialized certificate in early childhood education AND 2500 hours documented experience working with young children.
  • Spanish bilingual preferred
  • Able to lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Able to bend, sit and stand for long period of times
